Sunsynk Batteries: Review and Who They Suit (2026)

Sunsynk is best known for its hybrid inverters, and its batteries are the obvious partner for one. They are also confusing to shop for. Sunsynk's battery catalogue lists more than 20 low-voltage models across the SUN-BATT, W, G, L, X, S, Radia, ES and Maximus families, with several sitting at the same 5.12kWh or 5.32kWh size. Some can be mixed in one bank and some cannot, and the depth of discharge and warranty terms change from series to series.

This review sorts out the main series sold in South Africa: what Sunsynk's own datasheets say about each, which batteries can share a bank, how the warranty works and what pairing a Sunsynk battery does for your inverter warranty. Everything comes from Sunsynk's datasheets, support articles and South African warranty terms. We have not tested the batteries, and we have no commercial relationship with Sunsynk.

Key takeaways

  • Sunsynk sells two incompatible low-voltage battery groups. The older SUN-BATT wall-mount batteries cannot be mixed with the W, G and L series, so match any new battery to the group you already own.
  • Usable energy depends on the series: 80% on SUN-BATT and S-series cycle ratings, 90% on W, G and L, and up to 95% on the X 5.12 and X 10.24.
  • Sunsynk's South African warranty gives the cells 10 years or 6,000 cycles and the BMS five years, with conditions: under 700 cycles a year, a Sunsynk-certified installer, and a Sunsynk-certified inverter.
  • Sunsynk's inverter datasheet says the five-year inverter warranty becomes 10 years when installed with a Sunsynk battery.
  • Ignore the catalogue's blanket claim that every Sunsynk battery is IP65. The G, SUN-BATT and S-series datasheets say IP20, which means indoors.

Sunsynk at a glance

Sunsynk's South African datasheets name Globaltech Sunsynk South Africa (Pty) Ltd in Ferndale, Randburg, as the local company. Its South African manufacturer's warranty terms name Sunsynk Limited. Sunsynk inverters are often compared with Deye, and our guide to Sunsynk vs Deye inverters covers that relationship. None of the battery documents we read names Deye, so we have not assumed any link for the batteries.

Every model in this review is a 51.2V lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery with a built-in battery management system (BMS), designed for 48V hybrid inverters.

Which Sunsynk batteries can be mixed?

Start here if you already own a Sunsynk battery. Sunsynk's battery compatibility article splits its older low-voltage models into two groups that must not be combined in one bank:

  • Group 1: the original SSLB1 and the SUN-BATT 5.12, 5.32 and 10.64 wall-mount batteries.
  • Group 2: the L, G and W series.

Sunsynk's W-series product page confirms the W batteries are cross-compatible with the L and G series. Some retailers say otherwise, so rely on Sunsynk's own pages and ask your installer to confirm with Sunsynk support for your exact serial numbers.

The newer X and S series were not on the compatibility article when we checked on 26 October 2026. The X-series pages describe the batteries as "fully compatible with the Sunsynk low-voltage ecosystem", which is a statement about inverters, not about mixing with older batteries. If you want to add an X or S battery to an existing bank, get written confirmation first.

The main series in numbers

These figures come from Sunsynk's datasheets for the SUN-BATT 5.32 (version 4), W5.3 (version 2), G5.3 (version 5), L5.3 (version 8) and X5.12 (version 7).

DoD means depth of discharge: the share of the battery's capacity it is set to use. The SUN-BATT datasheet rates nominal energy at 100% DoD in a laboratory test, but its cycle rating is at 80%, which is about 4.3kWh a cycle. That is our arithmetic. The X5.12 datasheet does not give a usable kWh figure, so we have not printed one.

The recommended 50A matters more than the maximum. At 51.2V nominal, 50A is about 2.5kW, which the SUN-BATT datasheet prints. A single 5kWh Sunsynk battery can deliver up to about 5kW, but if your backed-up loads regularly sit above 2.5kW, two batteries share the work more comfortably. Our guide to what a 5kWh battery can run shows how quickly common appliances use that energy.

A large single battery like the W10.6 or S 16.07 suits an 8kW or larger Sunsynk inverter where evening loads are long and heavy. At 100kg or more, each needs a floor or wall that can take the weight.

IP65 or IP20: where the battery can go

Sunsynk's catalogue page says all its batteries are IP65. Its own datasheets disagree: the W, L and X series are IP65, while the SUN-BATT, G and S series are IP20. An IP65 battery is designed to resist dust and water jets, so a sheltered outdoor wall or garage is possible. An IP20 battery belongs indoors. Neither rating protects against heat, and a battery in afternoon sun will age faster. Go by the datasheet for the exact model on your quote.

The Sunsynk warranty: read past the headline

Sunsynk's catalogue page advertises a 10-year product warranty. The South African warranty terms split the battery cover in two:

  • Cells: 10 years or 6,000 cycles. After year five, a faulty cell is replaced free, but you pay the labour.
  • BMS: five years.
  • Fewer than 700 cycles a year. The battery must be used on a daily cycle basis for energy storage only, and the cycle count per year must stay below 700.
  • Battery and inverter on one system. The terms require the battery and inverter to be connected as one system, and they exclude use with inverters not certified by Sunsynk.
  • Certified installer. A Sunsynk-certified installer must fit the system, for domestic or light commercial use.
  • Start date. Cover starts at installation, or six months after manufacture if the battery is installed more than six months after dispatch.
  • General cell ageing is excluded.

Throughput caps on the newer datasheets

The W and G datasheets add a throughput figure. The W5.3 and G5.3 list 16MWh, and the W10.6 lists 32MWh, at 70% end-of-life capacity. Divide 16MWh by the 4.79kWh usable energy and you get about 3,340 full cycles. At one full cycle a day, that is about 9.2 years. This is our arithmetic from Sunsynk's published figures, not a Sunsynk statement.

Calendar term for the cells10 years
When W5.3 or G5.3 throughput runs out at one full cycle a day9.2 years
At two full cycles a day4.6 years
Sunsynk W5.3 and G5.3 cover, SolarGuide calculation from Sunsynk datasheet throughput figures

For a home that keeps the battery mostly full as backup, the throughput will not be the limit. For a home that runs the battery hard twice a day, it might be. Our guide to lithium battery lifespan and cycles explains how these limits interact.

The 10-year inverter warranty

Sunsynk's single-phase SG04LP1 inverter datasheet gives the inverter warranty as five years, or 10 years when installed with a Sunsynk battery. The South African terms describe the inverter cover as a cumulative 10 years: the first five years cover all parts including labour, and the next five cover major components only, excluding labour and the display.

That is the strongest reason to pair a Sunsynk inverter with a Sunsynk battery. It is not a free extra 10 years of everything, and you should still read the solar warranties guide for how product, performance and workmanship warranties differ.

Inverter compatibility

Sunsynk batteries are designed for Sunsynk hybrid inverters, and the warranty terms exclude inverters Sunsynk has not certified. The S-series datasheets refer to a compatible inverter list covering "major PCS brands", but we could not find that list published on 26 October 2026. If you plan to use a Sunsynk battery with a Deye, Victron, Solis or other inverter, get written confirmation from Sunsynk for the exact pairing, because the warranty depends on it.

Going the other way, Sunsynk inverter owners have many third-party battery options, but each manufacturer's list decides. Our Dyness battery review notes that Sunsynk is not named on Dyness's July 2026 compatibility list, for example.

Who Sunsynk batteries suit

Good fit

  • Homes with a Sunsynk inverter. The pairing keeps the system in one ecosystem and lifts the inverter warranty to 10 years.
  • Owners adding to a W, G or L bank. Group 2 batteries allow up to 32 in parallel, so there is a lot of room to grow.
  • Homes that need an outdoor-rated battery. The W, L and X series are IP65.
  • Buyers who want one local support route. One brand covers the inverter and battery, with a South African office.

Think twice if

  • You own SUN-BATT batteries and want a W or G. They are in different mixing groups.
  • Your inverter is not Sunsynk. The warranty excludes inverters Sunsynk has not certified, and the list is hard to find.
  • You plan heavy cycling and value the full 10 years. The throughput figures on the W and G datasheets can end cover earlier.
  • You compare on nominal kWh. A 5.32kWh SUN-BATT rated at 80% DoD gives less per cycle than a 5.12kWh X-series at 95%.

What Sunsynk batteries cost

Sunsynk does not publish retail prices. On 26 October 2026, Sunstore listed the SUN-BATT 5.32 wall-mount at R22,218 including VAT, and IT Nerfrica Shop listed the W5.3 at R21,999 including VAT. These are listed equipment prices for the battery alone, not quotes. They exclude the inverter, protection, cabling, installation and the Certificate of Compliance (CoC), and they change often.

For the specifications we already list, see our product pages for the Sunsynk 5.32kWh battery and the Sunsynk 10.65kWh battery.

Before you buy a Sunsynk battery

Ask the installer or seller for:

  1. the exact model and series (for example SUN-BATT 5.32, W5.3 or X5.12), not just "Sunsynk 5kWh";
  2. if you already own Sunsynk batteries, confirmation that the new model is in the same mixing group;
  3. the usable capacity the system will be set to, and the recommended discharge current against your inverter's continuous load;
  4. the IP rating for the exact model and where it will be mounted;
  5. proof that the installer is Sunsynk-certified;
  6. written confirmation of the inverter warranty term with the battery included;
  7. the manufacture date, because cover can start six months after manufacture; and
  8. a paid invoice showing the battery and inverter serial numbers.

Our guide to comparing solar quotes shows how to check the battery line against the rest of an itemised quote.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Sunsynk battery worth it with a Sunsynk inverter?

It is the simplest pairing. Sunsynk's inverter datasheet says the inverter warranty goes from five to 10 years when installed with a Sunsynk battery, and support stays with one brand. The second five years cover major components only, excluding labour, so compare the total cost with a third-party battery on that basis.

Can I mix different Sunsynk batteries?

Only within the same group. Sunsynk's support article puts the SSLB1 and SUN-BATT wall-mount batteries in one group and the L, G and W series in another, and the two groups must not be mixed. The newer X and S series were not on that article when we checked, so get written confirmation before adding one to an existing bank.

How much usable energy does a Sunsynk 5.32kWh battery have?

It depends on the series. The W5.3, G5.3 and L5.3 give 4.79kWh at 90% depth of discharge. The SUN-BATT 5.32 is cycle-rated at 80% depth of discharge, which works out to about 4.3kWh. The X5.12 is rated at 95%.

What is the Sunsynk battery warranty?

Under Sunsynk's South African terms, the cells carry 10 years or 6,000 cycles and the BMS carries five years. You pay labour for cell replacements after year five. The battery must do fewer than 700 cycles a year, be installed by a Sunsynk-certified installer and run with an inverter Sunsynk has certified.

Is SolarGuide the installer?

No. SolarGuide is an independent referral partner. Alumo supplies, installs, finances and warrants the systems. We help you compare options and get a free quote. We have no commercial relationship with Sunsynk. All pricing is indicative and subject to a site assessment and credit approval.
