Canadian Solar Panels Review: Which Models SA Shops Sell

Canadian Solar is a well-established panel maker with a South African office, so if a quote names it you are not dealing with an unknown brand. The question is which Canadian Solar panel you are being offered. Most of the ones we found on South African retail sites on 26 October 2026 were from the older HiKu6 range, which uses mono PERC cells. The one TOPCon listing we found was a 555W TOPHiKu6, and we found no local listing for the newer 54-cell TOPCon panels that carry Canadian Solar's longest 2026 warranties.

That gap shapes the buying decision more than the brand name does. This review compares the HiKu6 panel that is on sale locally with two current TOPCon models, using Canadian Solar's own datasheets and warranty documents, and sets out what to check before you sign. For the wider brand comparison, our guide to the best solar panel brands in South Africa puts Canadian Solar next to Jinko, Trina, JA and Longi.

Key takeaways

  • Most Canadian Solar panels listed by South African retailers on 26 October 2026 were HiKu6 mono PERC models, such as the 460W CS6L-460MS. The only TOPCon listing we found was a 555W TOPHiKu6 on SunStore.
  • The HiKu6 datasheet gives a 12-year product warranty, up to 2% power loss in year one and 0.55% a year after that, and a temperature coefficient of -0.34% per °C.
  • Canadian Solar's 2026 TOPCon warranties promise at least 87.4% of rated power at year 30, with 15-year product cover on several 54-cell models.
  • Warranty claims for Africa go to Canadian Solar's office in Newlands, Cape Town, according to its warranty documents.
  • At R1,855.95 for 460W, the HiKu6 works out to about R4.03 per watt, more than the R3.30 median for 585W to 630W panels in our Q3 2026 price index.

Who Canadian Solar is

Canadian Solar's about page says the company was founded in Canada in 2001 and has been listed on the NASDAQ since 2006, and that it has delivered "nearly 180 GW" of modules. Its datasheets name CSI Solar Co., Ltd. in Suzhou, China, as the manufacturing entity. The same about page lists "Tier 1 PV Module Manufacturer, BloombergNEF (2016-2026)". That is Canadian Solar's description of its own ranking. Tier 1 is a measure of bankability, not a quality test, as our brand comparison explains.

Independent testing is more useful. The 2026 Kiwa PVEL Scorecard, published on 27 May 2026, lists several Canadian Solar TOPCon and heterojunction panels as Top Performers, including the 54-cell TOPHiKu6 (CS6.2-54TM, 480W to 525W) and the 66-cell CS6.2-66TM. None of the HiKu6 PERC models sold locally appear on that list. PVEL tests the bill of materials a manufacturer submits, so a Top Performer result applies to that model, not to everything with the same logo.

What South African shops actually sell

On 26 October 2026, Sustainable.co.za listed three Canadian Solar panels, all HiKu6 mono PERC:

SunStore listed a Canadian Solar 555W TOPHiKu6, an n-type TOPCon panel, at R2,450.13 with a minimum order of three. Its page gives 21.5% efficiency, a 12-year product warranty and a 30-year power warranty. Solar Shop's Canadian Solar brand page said "No products available yet". We could not load several other retailer sites, so other models may be on sale elsewhere. If you see "Canadian Solar 450W" or "460W" on a quote, it is almost certainly a HiKu6 PERC panel, not one of the TOPCon models.

Prices are retailer listings for the panel only, inclusive of VAT, on the date checked. They are not installed prices or quotes.

What the numbers mean on a South African roof

Heat. A panel loses output as its cells warm above the 25°C test condition. On a summer roof the cells can run far hotter than the air. The HiKu6 loses 0.34% of its power for each degree, against 0.29% for the TOPCon panels. With a cell 35°C above the test condition, that is roughly 11.9% lost against 10.2%. This is our arithmetic from the datasheet coefficients, not a field measurement, but the direction matters in Gauteng, Limpopo and the Northern Cape.

Degradation. The HiKu6 warranty allows up to 2% loss in the first year and 0.55% a year after that. The TOPCon warranties allow 1% and then 0.4%, and promise at least 87.4% of rated power at year 30. Over a system's life, slower guaranteed degradation is worth more than a few watts on the label.

Size. The 54-cell TOPCon panels are about 6cm longer than the HiKu6 460W and give 40W to 75W more per panel. On a small or broken-up roof, that can mean one or two fewer panels for the same array. Our roof space guide explains how to check fit.

Bifacial or not. The TOPBiHiKu6 has glass on both faces and can gain from light reaching the back. On a typical pitched tin or tile roof, the gain is small. Our bifacial panel guide covers when that extra glass earns its keep.

The warranty: what Canadian Solar actually promises

Canadian Solar's 2026 TOPCon warranty documents set out the terms most South African buyers ask about:

  • Product warranty. 12 years as standard, rising to 15 years for the CS6.2-54TB and CS6.2-54TM. Some black-frame and all-black residential models get 25 years, with conditions.
  • Performance warranty. 30 years: at least 99% of rated power in year one, no more than 0.4% loss a year after that, and at least 87.4% at year 30.
  • Start date. The day after installation is completed, or 90 days after delivery, whichever comes first.
  • Transfer. The warranty passes to a new owner only if the panels stay where they were first installed. That matters if you plan to move house with solar.
  • Costs. If a claim is accepted, Canadian Solar pays reasonable shipping both ways. You pay to remove and reinstall the panels.
  • Exclusions. These include "extraordinary hot, salt or chemical exposure", moved panels, and surges or lightning.

These documents apply to orders signed from mid-2026. A HiKu6 panel bought from existing stock is covered by the warranty that applied to its sale, so ask the seller for that document rather than assuming the newer terms.

Where claims go in South Africa

Both 2026 warranty documents name Canadian Solar South Africa Pty, Customer Service Department, at Letterstedt House, Newlands on Main, Newlands, Cape Town, as the contact for the Middle East and Africa, with the email address [email protected]. Canadian Solar's customer support page gives the same Cape Town address. Claims need the panel serial numbers and purchase invoice, so keep both with your installation documents.

A local claims office is a real advantage, but the first call usually goes to your installer, who has to diagnose the fault and remove the panel. Our guide to solar warranties explains how product, performance and workmanship cover fit together.

Price per watt

At R1,855.95, the HiKu6 460W on Sustainable.co.za works out to about R4.03 per watt, and SunStore's 555W TOPHiKu6 at R2,450.13 to about R4.41 per watt. The Q3 2026 edition of our Solar Price Index put the median for 585W to 630W bifacial panels at about R3.30 per watt, from 15 VAT-inclusive listings. A shop's discount or a bulk price can narrow that gap, but on these listings both Canadian Solar panels cost more per watt than the larger panels most retailers now stock, and the HiKu6 also has a shorter warranty and weaker heat performance.

Panel price is a small part of an installed system. Mounting, cabling, labour, the inverter and battery usually matter far more to the total. Use price per watt to question a quote, not to choose a system on its own. Our solar panel prices guide separates panel-only from installed costs.

Should you accept Canadian Solar panels on a quote?

A good sign if:

  • the quote names a current TOPCon model, such as a CS6.2-54TM or CS6.2-54TB, with its datasheet attached
  • the installer can supply the warranty document that applies to your order
  • the panel wattage suits your roof layout and the inverter's input limits

Ask more questions if:

  • the quote just says "Canadian Solar 450W" or "460W". That is likely a HiKu6 PERC panel. Ask why a PERC panel was chosen over a current n-type panel at a similar price
  • the panel is old stock with an unclear manufacture date or warranty document
  • you are adding panels to an existing system. A different panel model has to fit the inverter's voltage and current limits, as our guide to adding panels to an existing inverter explains

Not a concern on its own:

  • the brand. Canadian Solar's current panels carry the same warranty shape as the TOPCon panels from Jinko, Trina and JA, as our Trina vs Jinko comparison and brand guide show. The exact model and the installer behind it decide more than the badge

Before you sign, check that the quote lists:

  1. the full model code, including suffixes such as MS, TM or TB;
  2. the datasheet and the warranty document for that model;
  3. the panel count, total kWp and how strings connect to the inverter;
  4. the mounting system and roof type;
  5. whether the price is for panels only or an installed system; and
  6. who handles a warranty claim, including removal and reinstallation.

Getting a quote through SolarGuide

SolarGuide is an independent comparison and referral publisher, and eligible Alumo referrals may earn us a fee. Alumo does not name a panel brand on its current home package pages (checked 26 October 2026), so a quote through us is not a quote for Canadian Solar specifically. If you have a brand preference, say so in your request and ask Alumo to name the exact panel model and warranty in writing. Alumo supplies, installs and warrants the work it agrees to do; the site assessment and written quote set the equipment, price and scope.

Frequently asked questions

Are Canadian Solar panels good?

Canadian Solar is an established manufacturer with a Cape Town claims office, and several of its current TOPCon panels are 2026 PVEL Top Performers. Most models we found in South African retail on 26 October 2026 were older HiKu6 PERC panels with a 12-year product warranty and faster guaranteed degradation, so check the exact model on your quote.

Is Canadian Solar a Chinese company?

Canadian Solar says it was founded in Canada in 2001 and has been NASDAQ-listed since 2006. Its panel datasheets name CSI Solar Co., Ltd. in Suzhou, China, as the manufacturing entity, and PVEL's scorecard lists factories in China and Thailand for the panels it tested.

What warranty do Canadian Solar panels have?

It depends on the model. The HiKu6 PERC datasheet gives 12 years on the product, with up to 2% loss in year one and 0.55% a year after. The 2026 TOPCon warranties give 12 to 15 years on most models (25 on some black-frame panels) and a 30-year performance warranty of at least 87.4% at year 30.

Does Canadian Solar have an office in South Africa?

Yes. Its 2026 warranty documents and customer support page give Canadian Solar South Africa's customer service address in Newlands, Cape Town, as the claims contact for the Middle East and Africa.

Is SolarGuide the installer?

No. SolarGuide is an independent referral publisher. Alumo supplies, installs, finances and warrants the systems it agrees to install, and we help you compare options and request a free quote. Pricing is indicative and subject to a site assessment and credit approval.
