A solar carport is a parking structure with photovoltaic panels forming the roof. It can generate electricity without using the main roof, shade vehicles, and create a natural location for an EV charger. It can also cost more than people expect because the structure, foundations, drainage, electrical route and parking layout are part of the project.

Search results often make a solar carport look like a simple panel purchase. It is not. The panels are usually the familiar part. The project lives or dies on the steel or aluminium frame, wind loading, clearance, water management, cable distance and the value of the electricity the site can use.

What determines solar carport cost?

There is no useful national price without a design. Two carports with the same number of panels can have very different project costs. The main drivers are:

  • number and size of parking bays;
  • single- or double-sided structure;
  • steel, aluminium or another frame system;
  • concrete foundations and ground conditions;
  • wind and weather loading for the location;
  • panel wattage, layout and shading;
  • inverter, protection and battery requirements;
  • trenching and cable distance to the distribution board;
  • drainage, gutters and rainwater management;
  • EV charger type and cable route;
  • engineering, approvals and electrical compliance; and
  • whether the carport is residential, commercial or a multi-bay installation.

The honest way to compare solar carport quotes is to separate the structure from the energy system. That shows whether a supplier is charging for a substantial civil and steel project or simply presenting a low panel number that excludes the part you need to park under.

Is a solar carport better than rooftop solar?

Often, the roof is the cheapest place to put panels if it is structurally sound, unshaded and close to the electrical connection. A carport becomes more interesting when:

  • the roof is shaded, fragile, too small or facing poorly;
  • the property has valuable parking that needs shade;
  • the site wants a visible renewable-energy feature;
  • an EV charger can use the daytime generation;
  • a business wants to combine parking improvements with energy generation; or
  • the project needs a new structure anyway.

The carport is not automatically more efficient because it is new. It still needs the same inverter, cables, protections, approvals and maintenance as a rooftop system, plus a structure that can safely carry the weather loads.

How many panels fit on a carport?

The answer depends on the bay dimensions, clearance, panel size, orientation, columns, vehicle movement and maintenance access. A double-bay structure may have space for several panels, but the usable area is smaller than the full rectangle once drainage and edge clearances are considered.

Do not design from a satellite image alone. The final layout should show the vehicle envelope, pedestrian route, column positions, turning space, roof pitch, water run-off and access for replacing equipment. A few extra panels are not worth creating a structure that is awkward to use every day.

Solar carports and EV charging

An EV charger is a load, not a magical solar accessory. A car may be parked during the day, which creates a helpful overlap between solar generation and charging. But charging speed, vehicle arrival time, battery state of charge, charger rating, household load and the carport's generation profile all matter.

A sensible design answers four questions:

  1. How many kWh does the vehicle usually need each day?
  2. How long is it parked at the carport during daylight?
  3. Does the site need fast charging or is overnight charging acceptable?
  4. What happens when clouds, load-shedding or another building load reduces solar output?

A small home charger may be adequate for a regular commute. A workplace or fleet carport may need several charge points, load management and a larger grid connection. In either case, the charger should be designed with the whole site's electrical capacity rather than added after the solar array has been specified.

Do you need a battery?

Not necessarily. If the car is present during the day and the charger can modulate its demand, direct solar charging may use a useful portion of the carport's output. If the car leaves before the best solar hours, a battery or grid charging may be needed to meet the driver's routine.

A battery can also provide building backup, but that changes the system design and cost. The battery must be sized for the loads it is expected to run, not simply for the panel capacity. A car battery, a home battery and a solar carport all have different jobs.

Engineering and approval questions

Before accepting a solar carport proposal, ask for:

  • a structural design suitable for the site's wind and weather conditions;
  • foundation and drainage details;
  • corrosion protection and maintenance requirements;
  • a roof or canopy warranty that covers the relevant components;
  • electrical single-line diagrams and protection details;
  • EV charger load management, if chargers are included;
  • the grid connection and export assumptions;
  • the Certificate of Compliance and any municipal process; and
  • a clear handover pack with manuals, warranties and monitoring access.

For a commercial carport, also confirm planning permission, landlord consent, parking bay rights, accessibility, fire routes, insurance and construction phasing. A project that blocks the loading area for weeks should price that disruption honestly.

How to judge payback

Start with electricity that will actually be used. A carport may produce more energy than the EV needs, particularly on days when the vehicle is away. The value of that surplus depends on whether it serves the building, charges a battery, exports to the grid or is curtailed.

Compare at least three cases:

  • Carport PV without battery: direct solar use, grid charging when needed.
  • Carport PV with managed EV charging: the charger follows available generation and site demand.
  • Carport PV plus battery: more flexibility and backup, with extra capital and replacement considerations.

The calculation should include the value of parking shade, avoided grid electricity, charger utilisation, maintenance, financing and the structural cost. It should not count the same kWh twice, once as vehicle charging and again as building savings.

If your roof can take panels, compare that route first. If it cannot, or if the parking structure has its own value, a solar carport may be a strong alternative.
