The right inverter and battery pairing matters more than a headline kW or kWh figure. See the models currently listed by SolarGuide, then ask for a quote based on your home and usage.
Growatt is one of the most common inverter names on South African quotes and retailer shelves, mostly because its "5kW" units cost less than the market leaders. The trouble is that "Growatt 5kW" can mean three quite different machines. The SPF series is an off-grid inverter-charger built for backup. The SPE series is a newer hybrid with a grid-tied function. The SPH series is a grid-interactive hybrid with an outdoor-rated case. They differ in warranty, enclosure, how much power they deliver from the battery, and, most importantly, whether you can register them with your municipality or Eskom.
This review goes through the residential range Growatt publishes on its own website, using its current datasheets and warranty cards, and checks each model against the City of Cape Town's NRS 097-2-1 list. Then it helps you match a series to the loads you actually need to keep running.
Key takeaways
The SPF 5000 ES and SPF 6000 ES Plus are low-cost off-grid inverter-chargers with IP20 (indoor) cases and a 2-year factory warranty on Growatt's off-grid warranty card. Neither appears on Cape Town's NRS 097-2-1 list.
The SPH 3000 to 6000TL BL-UP hybrids are on the list, have an IP65 case and a 5-year warranty (10 years optional), but the SPH 5000 delivers 4,000W from its backup output.
In the SPE range, Cape Town lists the SPE 8000, 10000 and 12000 ES and the SPE 6000TL HVM-G2, but we did not find the SPE 5000TL HVM-G2.
Growatt suits budget-conscious backup and owners whose installer knows the platform. Check the exact model string before you sign.
The Growatt residential range in South Africa
Shenzhen Growatt New Energy is a Chinese manufacturer. Its product catalogue lists single-phase off-grid inverters, single-phase and three-phase hybrids, grid-tied inverters, batteries and monitoring hardware. For South African homes, three single-phase families matter most.
SPF: off-grid inverter-chargers
The SPF series is Growatt's backup workhorse. The SPF 3500 to 5000 ES datasheet gives these figures for the SPF 5000 ES:
5,000VA/5,000W rated output, 10,000VA surge
48V battery, lithium or lead-acid
one MPPT, 6,000W maximum PV array, 120V to 430V operating range, 450V maximum open-circuit voltage, 22A per tracker
up to 100A solar charging and 80A grid charging
pure sine wave, 93% peak efficiency
10ms typical transfer time, 20ms maximum
up to 6 units in parallel
IP20 enclosure
Growatt says it can work "with or without battery" and that PV and grid can "power the load jointly" when solar is insufficient. The bigger SPF 6000 ES Plus (datasheet) lists 6,000W output, 12,000VA surge, two MPPTs, 8,000W of PV at up to 500V, the same 100A solar charge current, and two AC inputs (grid and generator) with an integrated transfer switch. It is also IP20, with a dust filter.
IP20 means indoor or sheltered mounting only. These are Growatt's equivalent of the Axpert-style units in our budget inverters guide, with a better-known brand behind them.
SPE: hybrids with a grid-tied function
The SPE family sits between the SPF and SPH. Growatt describes it as a "hybrid solar inverter" with two AC input terminals, an integrated transfer switch, dual outputs for load management and a "grid-tied function for peak shaving".
SPE 5000TL HVM-G2: 5,000W on-grid and backup output, one MPPT (22A), 5,000W recommended PV, 48V battery
SPE 6000TL HVM-G2: 6,000W on-grid and backup output, two MPPTs (16A each), 8,000W recommended PV, 48V battery
60V to 450V MPPT range and 500V maximum DC voltage on both
10ms typical switching (20ms maximum for a single unit), IP20, fan-cooled, Wi-Fi or 4G monitoring
For bigger homes, the SPE 8000 to 12000 ES datasheet lists 8kW, 10kW and 12kW models with the same figure for on-grid and backup output, two MPPTs at up to 27A each, 550V maximum DC voltage, up to 15,000W of PV on the 12kW model, under 20ms switching, IP20 and "CE, NRS097" among its certifications. It also lists noise under 75dB, so plan where it is mounted.
SPH: grid-interactive hybrids
The SPH series is Growatt's grid-interactive hybrid for low-voltage batteries. The SPH 3000 to 6000TL BL-UP datasheet gives these figures for the SPH 5000TL BL-UP:
5,000W maximum AC output to the grid side
4,000W maximum backup output, with under 10ms switching
4,000W continuous battery charge and discharge, 85A, on a 42V to 59V (48V) battery, lithium or lead-acid
two MPPTs, 9,500W maximum recommended PV, 120V to 550V range, 13.5A per tracker
97.5% maximum efficiency
IP65, natural cooling (no fan)
warranty "5 years / 10 years" (standard and optional)
NRS 097-2-1 among the listed certifications
The 4,000W backup figure is the one to understand. During an outage, the SPH 5000 and 6000 can both deliver only 4,000W to your backed-up circuits, so a kettle and a microwave together reach the limit sooner than the "5kW" label suggests. The 13.5A tracker limit also matters with large modern panels, which can exceed that current. Ask how the strings will be configured.

The approval question: is Growatt NRS 097-2-1 approved?
NRS 097-2-1 is the South African specification for inverters connected to the grid. It covers anti-islanding (the inverter must stop feeding the network during an outage so line workers are safe), voltage and frequency limits, and power quality.
You need that certificate even if you never export. Eskom's small-scale embedded generation page lists "a NRS097-2-1 type test certificate for the inverter" as one of three registration documents, and says all households and small businesses with systems below 100kVA must register, "even if they do not export electricity". Only fully off-grid customers who can prove independence from Eskom's supply are exempt. The City of Cape Town states that since 1 October 2023 all new solar PV and battery systems are treated as grid-tied and must use a City-approved inverter, and that it is no longer accepting applications for standby and off-grid systems.

The list also includes Growatt's MAX commercial grid-tied inverters and WIT commercial hybrids. Not finding a model doesn't prove it is uncertified, but it does mean you should not assume one is covered because a sister model is. In practice, an SPF wired into a grid-connected home in Cape Town or an Eskom-supplied area is likely to be a registration problem.
What to do with this:
Ask for the exact model string from the rating label, not "Growatt 5kW".
Ask the installer for that model's NRS 097-2-1 certificate and check it with your distributor.
If you're in Cape Town, find the model on the City's list. Elsewhere, ask your municipality or Eskom what it accepts.
If a "5kW" quote is for an SPE 5000TL HVM-G2, ask whether the listed SPE 6000TL HVM-G2 or an SPH would suit you instead.
Our SSEG registration guide explains the full process, documents and Certificate of Compliance.
Not sure which system you need?
Get a free, no-obligation quote sized to your home, usage and budget. It only takes a minute.
The off-grid inverter warranty card, linked from the SPF product pages, gives a Growatt factory warranty "valid for 2 years from the delivery date".
The PV and hybrid warranty card, linked from the SPE product pages, gives 5 years "from the date of installation and no more than five and a half years from the delivery date".
The SPH datasheet states 5 years, with 10 years optional. Both cards say you can buy an extension by contacting Growatt. Exclusions include incorrect installation or commissioning, insufficient ventilation, opening the casing without approval, and lightning or over-voltage. Claims go through your supplier, who sends the claim form to Growatt or an authorised service partner, and you need the purchase and installation invoice.
Some South African sellers advertise their own warranty periods. Ask whose warranty it is, who registers it, and whether there is a loan unit while a faulty inverter is repaired. A cheap inverter gets expensive if it sits in a repair queue for weeks.
Monitoring: ShinePhone and ShineServer
Growatt's monitoring platform page describes ShinePhone as the "system monitoring APP for users", one app for all Growatt products, and ShineServer as the web version, with self-consumption and energy trend displays. Installers and distributors use a separate O&M platform called OSS, and ShineTools for local commissioning and firmware updates.
The inverter connects through a plug-in datalogger. The SPH page lists ShineWiFi-X, ShineLink-X, Shine4G-X and ShineMaster options, while the SPF datasheets describe Wi-Fi or GPRS monitoring as optional. Confirm the datalogger is included in your quote. Ask the installer to set up your ShinePhone account at handover, so the system is linked to you rather than only to their installer account.
For lithium batteries, the battery's management system should communicate with the inverter. The SPH datasheet lists RS485 and CAN interfaces. Check that your battery is on Growatt's current compatibility list before you buy the pair.
Which Growatt suits which home?
Start with the loads you need to keep on, not the label. Our guide to what a 5kW inverter can run shows how quickly a kettle, microwave and fridge add up.
SPF 5000 ES or 6000 ES Plus fits if:
you need low-cost backup for lights, Wi-Fi, TV, a fridge and plugs
the system is genuinely off-grid, or your distributor has confirmed it will accept it
it can be mounted indoors, and a 2-year factory warranty is acceptable
on the 6000 ES Plus, you want a separate generator input
SPE fits if:
you want more backup power than an SPH gives, such as 6kW to 12kW for a bigger home, on a 48V battery
you choose a listed model (SPE 6000TL HVM-G2 or the 8000 to 12000 ES) and can mount it indoors
fan noise in the chosen spot isn't a problem
SPH fits if:
you want a registrable grid-interactive hybrid at a lower price than the market leaders
you need an outdoor-rated (IP65), fanless unit
your backed-up circuits stay under 4,000W, and you value the optional 10-year warranty
Look elsewhere if:
your installer can't name the exact model or show its NRS 097-2-1 certificate
your evening backup load regularly exceeds 4kW and the quote is for an SPH 5000
you want the widest pool of installers who already know the system. Our best solar inverter guide sets out how we compare Sunsynk, Solis, AlphaESS and Sigenergy, and our LuxPower review covers another lower-priced brand with a similar off-grid and hybrid split
If upfront cost is the reason you're looking at Growatt, a monthly plan is another route. Alumo's solar and battery rent-to-own packages use a Solis 5kW inverter and an Eenovance 5.32kWh battery, and its subscriptions also start with a 5kW inverter and 5.32kWh battery. Alumo installs the system, and the final design is confirmed after a site assessment.
The exact model, including suffixes such as ES, ES Plus, TL BL-UP or TL HVM-G2

SolarGuide is an independent referral partner and doesn't sell Growatt, and Alumo doesn't install it. If you'd like a comparison, size backup around the appliances you need and Alumo will assess your home and design a registered, installed system.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Growatt SPF and SPH?
The SPF is an off-grid inverter-charger for backup, with an IP20 indoor case and a 2-year factory warranty on Growatt's off-grid warranty card. The SPH is a grid-interactive hybrid with an IP65 fanless case, a 5-year warranty (10 optional) and NRS 097-2-1 listed among its certifications. The SPH 5000 delivers 4,000W from its backup output.
Is Growatt NRS 097-2-1 approved?
Some models are. Cape Town's list dated 11 September 2026 includes the SPH3000 to 6000TL BL-UP, the SPH10000TL-HU, the SPE 8000, 10000 and 12000 ES and the SPE 6000TL HVM-G2. We did not find the SPF models or the SPE 5000TL HVM-G2. Check the exact model on your quote.
Is a Growatt 5kW inverter enough for a house?
It can run typical essentials such as lights, Wi-Fi, TV, a fridge and some plugs, provided heavy loads like the geyser, oven and kettle are managed. On an SPH 5000, plan around 4,000W during outages, because that is Growatt's stated backup output.
What app does Growatt use?
ShinePhone on your phone and ShineServer in a browser. The inverter needs a Growatt datalogger, such as a ShineWiFi-X, to connect.
